GREEN ACTIVITIES
Second College Go Green
It is a green campaign program which was held in Second College resident, UPM and was launched in the year of 2010. I was the Deputy Director of the program which was named as 'Second College Go Green'. The program aims to develop and inculcate the environmental awareness among the collegians and the staff. Several green activities were successfully carried out with the collegiate such as :
Second Recycle !
Partnership with the Ministry of Higher Educational of Malaysia, we had brought in our very first few units of recyclable bins. Every 2 weeks, volunteers from the secretariat members will go and collect recyclable materials like old newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and beverage cartons from room to room, sort accordingly and sell it to the respective recycling centers. Half of the money received was given to the volunteers and the balances will be kept under secretariat account.
Zero Polystyrene Campaign
This activity aims to reduce the usage of polystyrene and plastics among the collegiate, instead we are using only reusable food and beverage container for take away foods and to replace plate and glass during any college events. Every collegiate also was required to buy the environmental friendly food container via our secretariat for only RM 3 and it is quiet reasonable.
Every Wednesday, collegiate must avoid using polystyrene and plastics and they are encouraged to use reusable food container for any foods that bring into the college.
River Rescuer
In pursuit to spread the environmental awareness, we had also organized a green recreational activity called the 'River Rescuer'. 40 collegiate were chosen to join and participate in this community service to Sungai Congkak, one of the most popular recreational river stream in Selangor. The main agenda of the activity is to help clean the river and the surrounding areas from any disposal materials like plastic bottles, food waste and others. At the same time, participants also enjoyed by the beauty of natural river ecosystem and swim in the cold crystal clear water.
Second Earth Hour
Every 28th of the month, we celebrated 'Second Earth Hour' for about half an hour from 8.00 p.m to 8.30 p.m. This activity was conducted monthly in the second college. During the activity, it is commenced with earth hour announcement made by the appointed member of the secretariat. All lights and other electrical appliances were switched off by the collegiate and there is no force for them to follow it. This activity received quiet a welcome response by the collegiate and the time from 8.00 p.m to 8.30 p.m was selected because it is considered not a peak hour and everyone shall well accommodate and tolerate with it.
Green Aerobic
Apart from improving the awareness on the environment, the awareness towards the importance of taking care of health also embedded in the Second College Go Green agenda. This activity is to promote a healthy and fit individual, where everything starts with good practice of living in clean environment and healthy life.

A group of 81 students from Faculty of Environmental Studies including 10 free volunteers participated in green community services to help clean the area in the Zoo Negara, Setapak. This program aims to develop and provide a path road for students to contribute their efforts in educating the community to love the nature and the environment.
In addition students are given the opportunity to help staff in the zoo, also set up a booth featuring facts about the benefits of recycling and selling T-shirts and wrap foods to visitors. 10 percent of revenue from sales of T-shirts and food containers will be donated to the National Zoo for their development program. In fact, it is not easy for the students to have a chance to participate in these activities that allowed them to enter the yard of a general ban and what's more is to wallow with the animals manure and the smell of rotten.
