What is SUSI?
SUSI stands for the Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders. It is a program which will be hosted by the East West Center located in Honolulu, Hawaii for a duration of 5 to 6 weeks. SUSI program is funded by the the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs whose mission is to promote mutual understanding between people of the United States and the people of other Countries. SUSI program aims to provide young aspiring student leaders from several countries including South East Asia and Middle East Asia, a substantive, initial exposure to the United States through short term study on a U.S. campus which will includes leadership development, community service activities, integrated and interesting study tour and interaction with American peers. SUSI on Global Environmental Issues
This program will be held for the fourth time this year of 2012. Again, 20 young and aspiring undergraduate student leaders from Southeast Asia comprising of Malaysia, Thailand, Burma and the Philippine were selected to join this program starting from May 6 to June 10, 2012. The first 3 weeks will be in the island of Oahu, Hawaii, one week in Boulder, Colorado and the final week in Washington D.C. This innovative environmental leadership program designed to foster a greater understanding of sustainability in the U.S. and aid in the development of more resilient communities in Southeast Asia.
On May 6, the program's participants will be arriving in Hawaii to begin team projects in one of the five key areas namely Water, Waste, Energy, Ocean and Land Management. Team will have peer mentors from the University of Hawaii and East West Center, and partner with local organizations such as the State of Hawaii's Green Business Program. On May 25, they will travel to Boulder, Colorado to experience the semi-arid Rocky Mountain climate and the University of Colorado, designated one of the ‘greenest’ campuses in America. Their last week will be in Washington D.C. with opportunities to present their team projects to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Senate Committee for Environment and Public Works.
